What you need to know about your auto insurance coverage?
If you are a driver in Ontario, you are required to have at least the mandatory minimum insurance coverage:
Third-party liability
In the event of an at-fault accident, you may face lawsuits for property damage or injury. Coverage includes court judgments, settlements, and legal fees, with a minimum of coverage of $200,000. ZAG recommends $2 million.
Direct compensation
If the fault lies with another driver in an accident, the direct compensation – property damage (DCPD) coverage ensures that your vehicle will be repaired without any deductible. This coverage also extends to the belongings inside your vehicle and provides coverage for a rental car if needed.
Accident benefits
This coverage extends beyond government health plans and includes expenses related to medical treatment, rehabilitation, attendant care, and lost income resulting from work absences. Additionally, it covers the expenses associated with hiring a substitute caregiver for your children or elderly parent.
Uninsured auto
It will allow you to pursue compensation for damages, both through in court or out-of-court, as if the at-fault driver possessed insurance. This coverage also includes protection for hit-and-run incidents.
Optional coverage for your auto insurance in Ontario
ZAG strongly recommends the following insurance coverages:
Collision Coverage
Collision coverage covers the cost of your repair bills if you damage your vehicle in an accident by hitting an object or another car.
Comprehensive Coverage
Comprehensive coverage pays to covers your car for thins like falling objects (hail, tree branches, etc.), theft, vandalism, fire, extreme weather, or flying debris on the road.
Increased Coverage Limits
You can purchase optional accident benefits in Ontario, which increase the maximum limits for your policy (medical, rehabilitation, attendant care, income replacement, death and funeral benefits).
